The main changes to the UI is that is looks like the rest of the THN, but all users shoud see little or no difference in usage.
The main bulk of the work has been refactoring and upgrading the code from the original old framework to a modern framework, since the orginal code was written back in 2005! There will be further updates to the older code that remains as this is the 2nd major step to bring the codebase up to modern standards, with new features being planned to 3.0.
The software that runs the Neocron Wiki has been ugraded to the latest version. At the same time, the infrastructure for the plugins and the wiki was completely overhauled to support the latest dev-ops working practices.
As a user you shouldn't spot any differences, but if something isn't working, you know what to do.
Also the first part of the works to migrate the wiki user DB to use the THN Account system has begin. More news when this is complete in the next few months.
Items DB V2 has left beta and and gone gold. We would like to thank our users for testing the beta and all the feedback.
The THN Items DB is one the biggest and most used sites for Neocron since 2006. Although it works well, some of the code and design is quite old. So a few years ago, a new design was laid down to allow the Item DB to expand with some of the upcoming changes in Neocron. Including
All items are versions - so you can see the history of what has changed for an item.
Users are now able to submit updates and new items to the DB.
The admins have the ability to add new attributes to the system. So the admins can now add new data types (eg Cabs in apartments) without patching.
A lot of the old data was cleaned up, and some missing data restored.
Some new data available to add and view on items, Smuggler item details, ammo clip sizes, and charges.
The CSS, JS and HTML has been re-worked to work better with modern browsers.
I would like to thank the players for testing the Item DB, and shaking out a few issues. Also the feedback I had in-game has been very welcomed. (Yes I do play NC)
Some of the main updates in this release.
This release enables the full item editing of items. Players can now submit updates for existing items, and submit new items that are not listed.
The diff view between different versions has ben completely overhauled. Some of you have sad you had to be a hacker/coder to understand it, well it's now 100% totally "runner" friendly so you can see what's changed.
After working on and off for the last 2 years I'm now pleased to annouce the release of Items DB V2 Beta 1
Items DB V2 is a re-write from scratch to fix a lot of issues that has made adding new features difficult over the years. Apart from a cleaner UI, each item is now versioned. The eventual aim of version to to hopefully track the changes for each item between patches. Players will now be able to submit updates for items, and this includes adding data to items that goes beyond what's available on an item ingame.
Further roadmaps will be published once Item DB V2 goes gold.
For the first beta release, there are a few features missing (Such as Faction DB Lists, and FSM lists) missing. They will return in future beta releases. There are bugs as well, which we hope you can report to us. The aim is to get things stable.
One important note, is Item DB editing and submitting of items is currently disabled for users. We need to add editing of attributes such as modifiers and requirements. This is epected to be added in Beta 2 or Beta 3.
Also I'm aware some players following the NC:C project want to see the old stats of items. You can view old stats of an item by viewing an item, and selecting the older version. I know this isn't ideal but this issue will be addressed later.
So how do you use the new Items DB - well you are probably already using it but you can head to the Items DB at http://db.techhaven.org/ and please report any bugs to the THN forums

In the past some of you have contributed or offered to contribute to the costs of running the THN but have not found it easy to do so. As of today, you can help.
Now some of you may be wondering why ask now? Well firstly I’ve only just got my fingers out and sorted out this out, and secondly the running costs of the THN have gone up over the last year.
If anyone has kept tabs on the history of hosting the THN, you will know it has been hosted on a shared co-lo sever from 2003 until late 2014 at quite low cost of around £70 a year. However due to some hardware failures and other issues, the THN was moved to a VPS which is costing a total of around £15 a month which is coming out of my own pocket. This current VPS setup isn’t ideal, as it does suffer from a lack of resources in terms of memory and CPU power. To get more processing power requires some more money, and that’s where you can help.
So if you want to give the THN a bit of cash to help out with the running costs, feel free and just click on the button on the right marked £Donate". Any donations received will be used to:-
Primarily pay for the hosting costs of the THN.
Purchase any software licenses needed for the THN (Although the THN runs on open source software which is free, however some software does cost a little to purchase/subscribe to)
Maybe the odd beer.
Some things to keep in mind. By donating funds to the THN however big or small, will not grant you any extra permissions, or access rights within the THN. Donations to the THN are also completely separate to the donations towards running the Neocron servers. In other words donating towards the THN costs does not pay towards the costs of running the Neocron servers. The NST have a separate donation page for the running costs of the Neocron servers, so if you want to help them out please use their donation page.
Still want to donate to the THN – Click that button on the right marked Donate – Thanks!
Last week I said I would post up what I have planned for the THN in the future, so here is a rough plan. Why a rough plan, well for many reasons. The main reason is trying to keep the THN in step with what the NST is doing to Neocron. Also this list isn't an exact order. If you are expecting timescales, I'm not going to give any exact times.
Items DB - As some of you know, the NST are changing the implants and armour on the Neocron test server, which will mean a massive update to the items DB. A rewrite from scratch is in progress, and a few people have did a little bit of testing. Some of the main changes include moving the whole Items DB to it's own domain and decoupling it completely from the CMS system that runs the THN main site. Also registered users will be able to submit item updates. A more detailed post will be posted soon hopefully with a URL for you to try and visit.
The THN Wiki - One of the main problems with the wiki is having to register to use it when you already have a THN login to the Rares DB and the THN forums. Also it will get an upgrade to the latest wiki software and also changes to various integrations to the THN and NC.
The THN main website - The CMS software and version is pretty old and it does need replacing, but it isn't an easy job due to the Items DB being part of the CMS. Once the Items DB has been replaced, we can look at moving to a new CMS/Publishing solution. Before then, we do need some articles moving off which belong in the NC wiki, so expect to see requests for help updating articles over the coming months.
Other bits - The Rares DB will get an upgrade along with the forum system. However these are low priority projects.
Some of you will be going – wow a update from the THN! If you have visited the THN’s front page you will notice a slight lack of news recently. Don’t worry, we have not gone away we are still here, even if we have been busy in the background.
Neocron is still here, and if you have been following updates on the forums you will notice that the NST is busy working on the next set of patches which will include a lot of changes to implants and armour. The implants and armour rework is going to affect the THN Items DB in a big way which I’ll outline in a week or two. In short there is a new version of the Items DB in development.
Over the next week or two I will post a few things up on the plans for the THN – stay tuned!
